New York's First-Time Camper Program: Free Gear, No Experience Needed

New York's 2026 First-Time Camper Program gave selected state residents a fully stocked campsite and in-person setup help for a free weekend. The 2026 lottery closed June 12, and the final session ended August 23. There is no remaining 2026 session to book.

What the 2026 program provided

NYSDEC supplied each selected camping party with a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, a lantern, and firewood. A Camping Ambassador met participants at the site, helped set up camp, and delivered a basic “Camping 101” lesson. Bathrooms and hot showers were located near the participating sites.

Participants could also learn activities such as fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and paddling. The program was designed for New York residents who had never camped before, with particular attention to reducing the equipment and planning barriers that stop families from trying it.

The verified 2026 schedule

NYSDEC listed seven sessions:

• Meacham Lake Campground — July 10–12;
• Kenneth L. Wilson Campground — July 17–19;
• Ausable Point Campground — July 24–26;
• Northampton Beach Campground — July 31–August 2;
• Mongaup Pond Campground — August 7–9;
• Nicks Lake Campground — August 14–16;
• Luzerne Campground — August 21–23.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly described the Nicks Lake weekend as the final session. NYSDEC's official release confirms that Luzerne ran one week later. The article was corrected on August 30, 2026.

What to do for a future program

NYSDEC has not yet published dates or eligibility for a 2027 edition. Do not assume the same campgrounds, equipment, lottery dates, or conditions will return unchanged.

If the program returns, the official announcement will likely appear through NYSDEC's press releases or camping pages. Treat any third-party page listing future dates before NYSDEC publishes them as unconfirmed.

Equipment-loan and guided beginner programs remove the cost of buying a complete setup before someone knows whether they enjoy camping. If you live elsewhere, check the official state, provincial, territorial, or municipal parks agency rather than assuming New York's rules apply locally.
